Do you have a tradescantia zebrina quadricolor in your collection? Did any of the leaves lost that ‘quad’ colors - meaning it reverted to its green form?
We often called a cultivar ‘reverted’ when its leaf shape, colour, or other striking characteristic goes back to a different form found in the mother plant. We use this term to describe a variegated plant that produces or has new growth that is non-variegated.
When a plant reverts back to green it is not possible to again reverse it back to variegated colorings. However, with the tradescantias I have in my collection, when you cut the plant’s stem, it is possible to produce new growth that has variegation.
However, a reverted tradescantia zebrina quadricolor is possible to get its variegation back on the same leaves that turned green without cutting given the right living condition.
I have personally never seen a reverted quad reverts back to its variegated form but I am able to produce new variegated growth from a reverted stem. I have listed my plants’ living condition below. You can try the same living condition too to see if your reverted quad can revert back to a variegated form.
- Pot is kept indoors at temparature ranging from 60-70 °F with about 50% humidity.
- It sits under a full spectrum led growlight with PAR value of 500-800 μMol that is 8 - 12 inches away from the light. Natural sunlight has a PAR value of 900-1500 μMol when the sun is directly overhead.
- I leave my llights on 12-16 hours daily
- The soil used in the pot in the photo is miracle gro. I’ve added more perlite for drainage.
- I fertlize with a liquid nutrient that I mix with water and is used when I water my plants.
- Treats with neem oil monthly as a maintenance to avoid pests.
- No soil pH info as I have not tried measuring but is also an important part of keeping your plant healthy and thriving.
- My watering schedule depends if the pot is halfway dry. I keep the soil moist but not soaking wet.
- Air circulation 12-16 hours a day
